To implement the National Literacy Summit Initiative's (NLSI) Action Agenda
for Literacy, the National Coalition for Literacy and I urge literacy
supporters around the country to make personal and institutional commitments
to advance parts of the Agenda that mesh with your own organization's
priorities. Please post these commitments to the NLSI web site at
www.nationalliteracysummit.org.
Here are two examples of commitments from the commitment data base ...
Example 1 ... Don Block indicates that one of the commitments of the
Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council will be to advance the Resources
priority, Outcome E [public awareness communications activities], Action 4
[establish relationships with media organizations] by "establishing a
committee whose members are all representatives of media (radio, TV and
newspapers) and marketing professionals. This group will have the task of
keeping literacy continuously in the public eye. Also the organization will
look into cause marketing relationships with local corporations.
If you would like to learn more about this initiative, perhaps to do
something similar in your community, contact Don Block at
dblockgplc at aol.com.
Example 2 ... Mary Ann Corley indicates that one of the commitments of the
National Center for Literacy and Social Justice will be to advance the
Quality priority, Outcome D [professional development], Action 6 [involve
students in training] by developing and conducting "Learner Leadership
Institutes in which adult learners receive training in group facilitation,
communication, and leadership skills to enable them to lead discussion
groups of literacy learners. The discussion groups will generate
themes/issues and pose problems to be addressed in literacy instruction.
Literacy instructors will also be trained in this problem-solving, dialectic
approach to instruction."
If you would like to learn more about this initiative, perhaps to work with
the NCLSJ, contact Mary Ann Corley at macorley1 at earthlink.net.
I will highlight additional examples from the commitment data base on an
ongoing basis. Additionally, we will feature a commitment of the week on the
NLSI web site home page. In the coming weeks a search capability will be
added to the web site so you can find others who are working on the same
Action item you are or so you can get ideas from others as you develop your
own commitments.
Please add your Action Agenda commitment(s) to the NLSI web site!
