PBS LiteracyLink has again established a special Web site for International
Literacy Day (Sept. 8) and the whole month of September. In addition to
information on some activities in Washington, D.C., we have international
stories on literacy learners, tips on how to become involved in literacy
activities and two special LitLinker Forum guests. From Sept. 1- 15,
Senator Patty Murray is our guest. Her biography, position on literacy,
and activities in literacy and other others are posted on the site. You
and your learners are invited to submit questions to the Senator during
these two weeks. In October, the questions, with her answers will be
posted. From Sept. 16 - 30, Daniel Swain is our guest. Daniel is a boy
who, at the age of 7, decided he should do something to help other children
have books available to them. Read about how this young man become involved
in improving literacy.
Also, on Sept. 8 we'll post three video/audio statements from some of the
leaders in adult education/literacy, Patricia McNeil, Assistant Secretary,
USDE, Office of Vocational & Adult Education, Andrew Hartman, Director,
National Institute for Literacy and Ronald Pugsley, Director, Division of
Adult Education and Literacy, USDE. Hear what they have to say to you and
the general public about literacy.
This is part of the PBS LiteracyLink effort to raise the level of awareness
in the general public about the need for improved literacy in the US. I
hope you'll visit our site and give us any feedback you have on it. I
especially hope you'll take advantage of the opportunity to email Senator
Murray, to thank her for her support of adult literacy and ask her any
questions you might have.
