Dear NLA'ers,
Here are three resources of possible interest to those concerned about the
connection of adult ed to welfare reform:
1. "Adult Education and Welfare to Work Initiatives: A Review of
Research, Practice, and Policy." Deborah D'Amico wrote this report in
1997-98 under a fellowship from the National Institute for Literacy.
Call 1-800-228-8813 (in the US) to order a copy. Or write to the
National Institute for Literacy, 800 connecticut Ave., NW, Suite 200,
Wash., DC 20006. (It's a terrific review of issues, challenges, and
possible directions for those hoping to use adult education to help
people get good jobs with living wages and benefits.)
2. "Learn to Earn: An Interactive Teleconference." This is also a 1997-98
NIFL fellowship product, prepared by Suzanne Knell. This video features
a group of moderators discussing issues crucial to welfare reform. See #1
above for ordering inforamtion.
3. The New Jersey Association for Lifelong learning will have several
sessions at its February 26th annual conference which deal with the
connections of adult education to welfare reform, unemployment,
productivity, unions, and community economic development. One panel will
feature Ed Schwartz (from the community coalition in Philadelphia, who has
been a recent contributor to NLA discussions) along with representatives
of similar community coaltions in Albany and Newark. NJALL hopes to help
adult educators and other stakeholders like employers, unions, social
service providers, community organizations, and public policy makers to
see the connections between adult education and economic and social
development.
The conference will also feature a presentation and workshop by
the New England Literacy Theater Group and a workshop on "adult learners
as leaders." For more information, contact Marian Eberly(732-445-8464,
