The problem of lack of "benefits" affects our ability to hire and retain the
best teachers. The problem is not only paying for these benefits but getting
access to them, even when the employee agrees to have his pay reduced to cover
the costs of health insurance. We need to get the department of education to
issue an executive order requiring those receiving federal grants to provide
access to health insurance for any adult educator. Or we need to allow
organizations like the AAACE to organize a group insurance plan for their
members. It's not easy to obtain individual insurance by onesself. You have
to be young and healthy to be accepted by any major carrier.
