NLA: Request for Info, statistics

I think the idea of having someone, such as the NIFL, pull together a
set of key literacy-related statistics is a great idea. We all use
numbers to make our case and describe our work. This is especially
true in the policy context. It is important that we all use solid
numbers and be consistent between each other. I know for myself, I
have run around to get certain figures many times but, unfortunately,
not ever captured them for later use or dissemination.

This issue even came up when the National Education Goals Panel
presented to the National Coalition for Literacy. In their annual
reports, they present very little literacy related information and
what is there is repeated year after year.

I am going to look into who we might be able to identify either here
on the staff or who we could contract with to do this. Alice has
already made a good start with the fact sheet in the public awareness
campaign booklet. I will let you know how this is going, and ask for
your input, when I find my "volunteer."

P.S. -- I am glad that Archie has brought up the new reader academy in
Illinois. He and his colleagues made an excellent presentation of the
concept, and we are happy to be assisting with scholarships for
attendees. I would guess they are going to get many more good
applications for scholarships than our funds will support, so if
anyone else could support this effort, it would be very helpful.

I am sure that you have all seen the National Adult Literacy Survey
(NALS) findings. I remember someone else making reference to it in this
listserve, (maybe Fran Keenan). You may look for the NALS at the USDE
web site, http://www.ed.gov/NCES/n...s/Overview.html#briefest. Good
luck.
