NLA Question: Int'l Literacy Day PR

Sept.8 is International Literacy Day, sponsored by UNESCO, and September is
designated Literacy Month, I believe by the Dept. of Education.

Earlier a question was asked about what companies and others are doing for
Literacy Day. PBS will feature International Literacy Day on its homepage
on Sept. 8 to call attention to the need for literacy and celebrate the
changes literacy can make in people's lives. We plan to provide a live
audio feed of a panel of adult learners providing testimony before members
of Congress, have a question and answer forum on line, and offer
suggestions from about 10-12 agencies involved in literacy on how to
improve literacy or become more involved in it in your community. This is
a real effort to reach the general public as well as those already involved
in literacy. Anyone can access the special site beginning Sept. 2 at
www.pbs.org/literacy/InternationalLitDay.html. We even have stories (some
in video and others print) of adult learners nationally and internationally
(thanks to Laubach Literacy International and DCLEARNs) The whole web site
is a collection of activities and information from a number of cooperating
agencies. We hope adult learners, adult educators and the general public
will find it informative and inspiring. We hope that efforts like these can
eventually affect public policy. I'd be interested in knowing if others
think that is realistic.
