[Nesabes] MassAAL Alert Regarding Campaign to Increase Adult Education Funding

Dear MassAAL Partners,

 

As you may already know, President Obama is sending his budget proposal to
Congress on Tuesday, April 21.  This is our best opportunity in years to
increase funding for Adult Education.  We are urging everyone in our final
push, especially students, to ask their representatives and senators in
Congress to include $750 million (a $250 million increase) for Adult
Education in the FY2010 budget.

 

This increase will benefit Massachusetts as well as all other states.  There
is a push to see which states have the largest number of calls and e-mails
to their senators and representatives.  Art Ellison, Public Policy Committee
Chair of the National Council of State Directors of Adult Education said
that this effort will not be successful without students playing a major
role because of their numbers and credibility as advocates for the field.  I
have attached a national e-mail message to the field, for background
information on this effort. 

 

I have also attached an excellent document by MCAE which contains talking
points for what students should say when they call or write.  The document
has talking points for teachers and staff as well.  It also includes
instructions for how practitioners can conduct a classroom activity where
students call their senators and representatives from the classroom (cell
phone) as part of a civics lesson.  We strongly encourage programs to use
some classroom time to allow students to fully participate in an important
civic duty if at all possible.  Remember, this is an excellent and much
needed opportunity to get increased funding for the field; especially in
these tough economic times.

by April 21 so that we can have an accurate way to measure our level of
