"Adult Literacy Awareness Day" will be held at the Massachusetts State
House in the Gardner Auditorium at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 13,
2008. Former and current adult learners, along with practitioners and
general supporters will meet at the State House on "Adult Literacy
Awareness Day." This year it is more important than ever to show strong
support in the way of large numbers attending the State House event.
This year there have been significant cut backs in funding to adult
basic education that have not yet reached the public sector. It's up to
us to keep this from becoming a trend. This event will be an
educational one for your students and a fun one as well. However, this
is the most serious and important "Adult Literacy Awareness Day" event
to date. It's up to you to send a loud and clear message that we need
more ABE, ESOL & GED programs that will help to make the Massachusetts
economy better-it is a wise investment that pays back exponentially.
Please do everything you can to take this opportunity to stand up for
the field and make your voices heard by bringing your entire student
bodies to the event. Please R.S.V.P. by utilizing the attached
document. Thank you for your strong support at last year's event as it
was the largest event ever held for the field of adult literacy in the
state of Massachusetts.

At the rally, speaking will be current students and graduates of adult
basic education (ABE, GED, & ESOL) programs, as well as elected
officials, and organizational supporters such as the Boston Adult
Literacy Fund (BALF), MCAE (Massachusetts Coalition for Adult
Education), & more! After the rally current students and grads will
visit with elected officials from their various districts.

Let's have a strong turnout to show the public and elected officials
that supporting adult literacy education is a wise investment. Bring as
many students from your program as possible. We are expecting adult
learners & practitioners from all (5) SABES Regions to be in attendance.

Thanks to our sponsors the Hyams Foundation, The Boston Foundation &
thanks to our legislative sponsor Massachusetts State Senator Dianne
Wilkerson. Thanks to State Representative Daniel Bosley for his
longstanding support for the field of adult literacy.
