Dear Colleagues,

Please forward this information to all counselors in your program.

The next NE SABES Counselor Sharing Seminar will be held on February 6,
2008

from 1-3:30 p.m., at NECC Lawrence, with Laura Kranis, as facilitator.

Attached please find the notes from the 12-5-07 Counselors' Sharing
Seminar and the agenda for the April meeting.

AGENDA for February 6, 2008

I. The topic for this session is "Immigrant Students: their rights
and needs"

Questions to begin the discussion:

* Immigrants are one of the best sources of immigration-related
information for other immigrants; however, misinformation also spreads
quickly in immigrant communities. How do ABE counselors keep abreast of
changes in immigration laws? How may we help our immigrant students
separate fact from fiction?

* Some immigrant students do not make use of available resources
because of a fear of possible legal or financial consequences including
deportation or an inability to sponsor family members who want to come
to the U.S. In what situations is there reason to exercise caution?
How can we help our students locate trustworthy resources? How can we
help them learn to trust that they can make use of many services without
repercussions?

* Which community resources have multi-lingual staff? Which have
demonstrated sensitivity to students' immigration status and cultural
norms?

* How does the new Massachusetts health insurance law affect
immigrants, both documented and undocumented?

* What do immigrant students need when they enter ABE programs?
How may we help them adjust? How do they feel about the information our
programs collect from students?

* How do communities become educated about the language
challenges faced by ESOL students? How do communities increase their
sensitivity to cultural differences? What is our role, and how can
student leaders help?

II. Sharing/Support/Problem-solving on other topics

III. Feedback

What was helpful about today's discussion?

What might we want to change in the future?

How may we encourage participation from other counselors in the region?
