Attached please find the notes from the last counseling sharing seminar
(2/6/08) and the agenda for the Upcoming Counselor Sharing Seminar to be
held on:

 

 


April 9, 2008 from 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM at NECC- Lawrence, in L 131


 

Topic:  "Next Steps: making the transition out of ABE... and into what?"

 

Overview:  Some students enter ABE programs for personal enjoyment and a
sense of achievement.  Most, however, want to obtain GEDs or diplomas or
improve their English-language skills.  In this session, we will discuss
how counselors help all of these students continue to develop and refine
their goals in order to plan their educational and career paths after
completing our programs.  We will discuss how to integrate long-term
planning into first contacts with students and how to help students be
truly prepared for success in college.  We will also discuss "next
steps" for students who do not advance in their studies at our programs.
Participants are asked to think about the personal qualities and
experiences possessed by former students with clear and successful life
paths.

 

*Note:  Lorraine has completed a World Ed online course on this topic
and has offered to present some of that material (why GED achievers
sometimes do not do well in community colleges) at the beginning of the
session.
