Working Effectively With Youth in the ABE Classroom
WHEN: Friday, March 30, 2007 from 1:00-4:30pm
WHERE: NECC-Lawrence Campus - 45 Franklin St., Lawrence,
MA - Room 244
AUDIENCE: ABE, Pre-GED, GED teachers; Program Counselors
PRESENTER: Lauren Capotosto has been working in youth-based ABE
and GED programs for the past six years. She is currently a literacy
specialist at Bunker Hill Community College and a GED teacher at the
Chelsea-based Roca Inc.
Has your program been enrolling more and more younger ABE students? Many
programs and practitioners have been striving for effective ways to work
with youth and young adults in the traditionally older-population ABE
classroom.
This session, which is part of the ABE Foundations Series (and may be
taken independently of the other sessions), will focus on working with
youth in the ABE classroom.
Working with young adults can be both tremendously rewarding and
challenging. This workshop will cover numerous strategies that can help
you engage and educate younger learners in the GED, pre-GED, and ABE
classroom.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will:
1) integrate learning activities appropriate for young adults into the
curriculum,
2) engage young adults through various instructional strategies,
3) incorporate individual interests into daily lesson plans,
4) identify key classroom management strategies.
IPQ: This workshop covers the following Indicator of Program Quality
(IPQ):
(IPQ 1) Curriculum development and instruction are aligned with and
incorporate learning standards from the Massachusetts ABE Curriculum
Frameworks and contribute to students' progress toward achieving their
goals.
