Dear Colleagues,
Northeast SABES will be holding some exciting workforce development
activities in the coming year! Keep an eye out for our flyers and
e-mails announcing the following events:
THE BOSS CAN'T DO THAT, CAN HE?? WORKER RIGHTS, HEALTH AND SAFETY
(8/14/07 & 8/16/07)There are still a few slots opened for this training
to be conducted by the UMass Labor Extension Program. Participants will
be introduced to the full worker rights curriculum and then engage in
activities from the health and safety module. Participants will receive
a full copy of the UMass curriculum! Register today at the SABES web
calendar calendar.sabes.org/northeast <http://www.sabes.org/> .
INTEGRATING CAREER AWARENESS INTO THE ABE PROGRAM (11/6/07 and
11/27/07) - This 2-session, 6-hour workshop promises to give you fun and
effective exercises to conduct in your ABE and ESOL program. Counselors
and teachers will learn how to help students plan for a career, set
employment goals, identify transferable skills, conduct a self
assessment and more! The workshop is highly interactive and uses a
variety of methods of teaching and learning including group and
individual projects and internet searches. Participants will learn how
to use the ICA curriculum and will be given a copy of the Curriculum
Guide.
NEW WORKPLACE EDUCATION STRAND!! PDP'S WILL BE OFFERED!! (Tentatively
scheduled to start in November) - This 4-session, 12-hour workshop
series will include 6 hours of "Marketing Your ABE Services to
Businesses" and 6 hours of "Workplace Needs Analysis". Many ABE
programs have said they don't even know how to start to engage
businesses in literacy work. These sessions will provide ABE Directors
and Coordinators with the skills necessary to identify local businesses,
communicate with them, identify workforce development resources and
learn how to partner with businesses for a workplace needs assessment.
This training will help prepare programs to apply for a DOE-funded
workplace education grant or just empower them to work effectively with
businesses in their community.
WORKPLACE EDUCATION VIDEO CONFERENCE SHARING GROUPS (3 planned for '08)-
The responses last year to these video conference sharing groups was
tremendous! We will hold 3 state-wide sharing groups for workplace
education practitioners to share their successes, challenges, questions
and promising practices.
WORKPLACE IMMIGRATION ISSUES (Planned for April, 2008)- This workshop
will provide up-to-date information on the status of immigration reform,
immigrant basic rights and workplace immigration issues so you can
better inform students of these issues. Stay tuned!
