Subject: [MCAEnews] Literacy President Petition Update, 11/30
Hi Members and Supporters of MCAE,
The Literacy President Petition is a national effort to get all
Presidential Candidates to address Adult Basic Education. The petition
will have great impact if we can nationally gather 10,000 signatures. As
you can see from the update from Jon Randall below, so far 2,150
signatures have been collected. With 156 signees, Massachusetts
currently ranks fourth among the states in participation. We can do
better than that.
The url for the Literacy President petition is
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/litpresident/
You can cut and paste the url into your browser to access the petition.
If you have already signed the petition, thank you for participating.
Please consider asking your colleagues and students to participate as
well.

Subject: Fwd: [AAACE-NLA] Literacy President Petition Update, 11/30
As of 9:15 AM Eastern Time today, there were 2,150 signatures on the
Literacy President Petition. We're 21% of the way to our goal of 10,000
signatures by December 17th.
Opportunities to make a difference don't come along every day! Don't
fail to take advantage of this one ...
- When you sign the petition, you will be asked to donate to the
company that hosts the petition. You do not have to donate - you can
sign it without donating. Don't let this stop you from signing or
encouraging others to sign!
- This is not lobbying. Independent Sector ENCOURAGES charities to do
exactly the type of things we're doing. Make this a civics lesson - give
adult learners a choice, a chance to exert their right to participate in
our democracy!
On to the update ...
Pennsylvania has vaulted into the lead with 319, followed closely by
Illinois with 299. Kentucky is in third place with 217.
In the second tier are Massachusetts (156), Delaware (155), and North
Carolina with 132.
The third tier includes Tennessee (84), New York (76), California (72),
Arizona (69), and New Hampshire with 54.
The following states are on the bubble - making a worthy effort but in
danger of bringing up the rear if they don't get above 50 ... the
District of Columbia (45); New Jersey (44); Louisiana (37); and Maine
and Vermont, each with 32.
Bringing up the rear:
VA & WA = 24 each; CT, MD, RI & SD = 20 each; MI = 17; FL & TX = 16; AK
= 14; NM & WI = 12 each; MO = 11; OH = 9; NV = 8; GA & MT = 7 each; MN =
6; AL & IN = 5 each; KS & OR = 4 each; AR, SC & WV = 3 each; CO & MS = 2
each; HI, ND, NE & WY = 1 each
To those of you whose state is back here ...
- Get your adult learners to sign and break out of this pack!
- A few of you are usually able to generate more activity than this -
you know who you are ... Please, get in the game!
- If you signed it, get your colleagues, friends, and family to sign
too!
And thanks to those of you who went to NPR.ORG and suggested a question
for the Dec. 4th Democratic Presidential Debate being sponsored by NPR
and Iowa Public Radio! Getting a literacy question into that debate at
this late date is a long shot - but hey, nothing ventured, nothing
gained.
- Jon
