Job Description
Full-Time Adult Secondary Education (ASE) Counselor
 
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Counselor is responsible for guiding students through their initial contact with the learning center and coordinating placement into classes or other educational services, and supporting them with basic survival counseling, educational guidance, and referral services.  The counselor also monitors learning progress and serves as a coordinator of appropriate counseling activities for adult learners
o        35 hrs per week;  minimum of one night per week; 12 month position.  Follows the Somerville Public School vacation and holiday schedule.
o        $33,633-$40,634 Salary range per SEU/STA contract

o         Reports to the Adult Secondary Education Program Administrator
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
o        Provide basic survival, academic, and personal counseling services including individual and/or group support sessions
o        Coordinate recruitment of new students for ASE department
o        Coordinate with Program Administrator, teachers, and GED Test Center to provide intake, orientation, testing and class placement of students
o        Provide counseling and advisement to GED Test Center clients
o        Maintain accurate student records including attendance, assessment, goal setting and follow-up as mandated by ASE department and DOE SMARTT system
o        Provide students with information about training and educational opportunities and career exploration
o        Participate in department center-wide meetings and activities and professional development
o        Participate in one of the SCALE Administrative divisions or an all center assignment from the Supervisor
o        Perform other miscellaneous department and/or SCALE duties as deemed appropriate  by the Program Administrator
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
o        Bachelor's Degree; Master's preferred; training or certification in counseling/social services 
o        Minimum of 2 years experience working with 16-21 population in a school setting or a  social service agency
o        Successful counseling experience in adult education program (preferred)
o        Excellent organizational, time management, oral and written communication skills
o        Strong computer skills including MS Word, EXCEL, and Internet/email
