[NCL_Update] Appropriations & OVAE Assistant Secretary

National Coalition for Literacy Update

The Senate continues debate on H.R. 2660, the Appropriations bill for the
Departments of Labor, HHS, and Education. We were unsuccessful in securing
an amendment that would raise funding levels for Adult Ed State Grants,
National Leadership Activities, and Even Start to the levels provided in the
House bill. Next week we will be asking literacy supporters to urge House
conferees to "hold the line" and Senate conferees to "recede to the House"
on these items as they meet to reconcile differences between House and
Senate versions of the bill.

In other news, President Bush announced yesterday that he intends to
nominate Susan Sclafani as the new Assistant Secretary for Vocational and
Adult Education.  Susan currently serves as Counselor to the Secretary of
Education, Rod Paige.
