This sounds like a good idea for the adult education and literacy field to
contribute to and make use of. From OMB Watch ...
HELP US PUT A FACE ON THE NUMBERS
---Have you ever wished that someone who could do something about it could
easily get a picture of what is really happening to people and communities
as federal and state programs and services are being eliminated or cut?
---Have you ever felt frustrated that policy makers in DC don't seem to
understand the lives of the real people for whom you advocate or provide
services?
---Have you worked to fight against a new budget cut or more tax cuts for
the wealthy, and could have used easy-to-find stories that actually show how
real people have benefited from government services or will be hurt by their
loss?
Soon, you can! OMB Watch, through our Social Investment Initiative project,
is launching a new website and database to collect stories about real people
or communities and allow searches by issue area, keywords, city, state, or
congressional district. You can go to Face on the Numbers by clicking
www.ombwatch.org/budget/face.html and read more by clicking the "About Face
on the Numbers" category.
Face on the Numbers is a way to allow the people you serve to actually tell
their story to a nation-wide audience and make a difference.
We are collecting stories primarily through nonprofits, including advocacy
groups, service providers, grassroots organizers, and policy organizations,
and have developed a website to allow any nonprofit to easily enter a story,
or allow the story teller sitting in their office to enter the story.
Then anyone -- congressional staff, the media, or national, state and local
nonprofit organizations -- can search for stories to use. If the storyteller
has agreed, he or she can also be contacted through the nonprofit, to give
more details, testify, or speak publicly.
This will be an ongoing project, and we hope to collect a sizable number of
stories that can be used over a longer-term, as well as make special
requests for stories around particular issues as they arise.
