Hello MWA listserv:

Here is some news from the Mass Workforce Alliance on the edge of summer.

First Meeting of the Boston Workforce Committee: The first meeting of the Boston Workforce Committee (formerly BWDC) of the Mass Workforce Alliance will meet Monday June 23rd from 3-5 PM at ABCD's LearningWorks, at 19 Temple Place in the 2nd floor conference room. Please contact Clare Shepherd, Chair of this committee, to RSVP for the meeting at cshepherd at bostonabcd.org.

The first meeting is open to everyone. Subsequent meetings of this committee will be for members only. Anyone can join the MWA as a member. To join on-line go to: www.massworkforcealliance.org/membership

Know and Go: This year the Mass Workforce Alliance has developed a half-day advocacy training called Know and Go. The training will help frontline workforce development professionals to understand the current system and how their particular expertise is vital to the creation of good pubic policy.

The first session will be held in September in the Berkshire Taconic region. We will schedule a second session in Boston in October. Space for the Boston session will be limited to 15 and current (paid) MWA members will receive priority. If you are interested in attending either session, please contact Alex Risley Schroeder at: alex at massworkforcealliance.org.

Publications: We have been getting a great response about our new publication, Working to Succeed: Individuals, the Commonwealth and Community-Based Organizations. Ordering is easy online. To order today, go to: http://www.massworkforcealliance.org/research

Other News

SkillWorks: Partners for a Productive Workforce has launched Phase II of the initiative to raise funds to support workforce partnerships, capacity building and public policy. They have released a Request for Proposal for businesses and organizations interested in applying for workforce partnership grants of up to $1.5 million over 5 years. The RFP is available for download at www.skill-works.org and the pre-application is due July 3rd. For questions contact

Loh-Sze Leung, SkillWorks Director, at lohsze.leung at tbf.org (617) 338-4377

The Workforce Alliance (our national sister organization, TWA) is sending an urgent call to action about another possible cut to federal WIA funding. They are estimating that Massachusetts may lose $1,781,140 in the 2009 federal budget cycle if there is another WIA rescission.

The TWA web-site www.workforcealliance.org is full of useful information. You can find information about responding to potential WIA cuts by going to "Join the Alliance" and choosing "Action Center." Or, to get to their automated message to Representatives you can click on:
