Dear MWA listserv:
Well it's spring, and there's a lot of new growth at Mass Workforce Alliance!
NEW WEB-SITE: Our new web-site: www.massworkforcealliance.org is now up and running! We will still be tweaking some of the features, but it is functional and we look forward to your visit! We want to encourage you to become a registered user on the site. Registration is free and should be quick. You can register by clicking on: http://www.massworkforcealliance.org/user/register
Registration gives you the ability to start your own blog on the site, comment on other blogs and add events to the calendar. Right now, Alex Risley Schroeder is blogging under the pseudonym "Finding Earth Works" about green jobs and she is looking forward to your comments and getting a lively discussion started. Check out her latest entry at: http://www.massworkforcealliance.org/node/32 .
We want to thank Steve Rockwell at Management Consulting Services for his help designing the web-site, and to The Boston Foundation's Vision Fund for the funding to hire Steve.
NEW PUBLICATION: After a lot of work, we have released our latest publication, "Working to Succeed - Individuals, the Commonwealth and Community Based Organizations."
This report contains a funding flow chart for the workforce development system, updated from our original 2003 publication. This chart has been used since its first release as a quick way to get a sense of the system. It's a fabulous tool for orienting people that may be less familiar with workforce development services -- like community partners, board members or volunteers -- whom you want to better engage with your services. Working to Succeed also contains interesting information about CBOs and why they are effective at providing workforce development services to some of the populations that need them most.
You can order our publications at: http://www.massworkforcealliance.org/research . Orders of over 10 copies get a 10% discount.
Although we had a lot of input from the MWA Board, Elsa Bengel, Beth Hogan, Susan Crandall, and Alex Risley Schroeder deserve special thanks for their contributions to the report content. Our designer, Todd Fairchild (www.toddfairchild.com), went above and beyond the normal bounds of graphic design for us. And the report would not have been possible without funding from the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley, SkillWorks, and the members, new and old, that supported this effort.
NEW MEMBERSHIP: MWA has completed the merger with the Boston Workforce Development Coalition, and has been accepting organizational and individual members. Membership benefits include free copies of the new Working to Succeed report, the right to run for at-large seats on the MWA board, the right to join the Advocacy and Boston Workforce Committees, and reduced rates on training. You can join MWA as a member at: http://www.massworkforcealliance.org/membership .
NEW POLICY: The MWA board has created a policy initiative that would create funding for pilot projects designed to investigate different ways to better integrate ABE with skills training programs. We are starting to discuss this with legislators and will be in touch with details as they get worked out, and ways to get involved. You can see our advocacy agenda at: http://www.massworkforcealliance.org/advocacy .
We look forward to your visits!
Best,
Deborah Mutschler
