Advocacy Alert – Call your State Representative!

As we’ve shared in a couple of emails since November, MWA has been working
with Senator Dianne Wilkerson and other legislators to develop language for new
state funding for skill training (one part of the “Emerging Technology bill”
).

In December, the legislature passed a bill for $6M for skill training and
targeted the funds in part to low income and low wage workers and also required
that non-profit community based organizations deliver some of these services.
Your calls, emails, faxes, and letters made a big difference in this
legislation passing!

Then, Governor Romney vetoed 75% of this money and the language re low
income/low wage workers and non-profit CBOs. Next week, the House and then the
Senate will take a vote to override the Governor’s veto. If they vote to
override, then these new funds will be available to provide services!!!

So, here’s one last request for all of us to make calls to urge that
legislators override the Governor’s veto.

Please make two phone calls this Thursday or next week on Monday or Tuesday
to:
1) Speaker Thomas Finneran at 617-722-2500;
2) your own state representative. (To find out the name and phone number of
your representative, go to www.wheredoivotema.com, fill in your home address,
then click on “Find My Election Information.” This will take you to a new
screen. Scroll down and click on the name beside “Rep in General Court.”
This will give you a picture and telephone # for your representative.)

One message you can leave with legislative staff – or with your state
representative if you talk with them – is “please vote to override the Governor’s
reduction of funds and his veto of language in Section 54 of Chapter 141 (the
Emerging Technology Bill). We need new funds for workforce development
services!” If you want, please add your own examples of the local need for skill
training, and the benefits to your community.

Please call the Speaker and your state representative today. Then ask a
friend to make the same calls! It will make a difference!

Please let us know how this goes – by sending an email to
massworkforce at aol.com.

Thank you.
