As you may have heard, the State Senate is now considering adding skill
training funds to a piece of legislation proposed in the House of Representatives
by Speaker Finneran.

I have attached a letter sent to Senator Hart, the Chair of the Commerce and
Labor Committee. There is very little funding for skill training (just 4 or
5 slots per year per city/town!). We think now is a good time to try to
change that.

The purpose of this email is to ask you to write a letter to your State
Senator, letting them know that we need the state to fund skill training services,
particularly for low income residents and low wage workers.

If you do wish to write such a letter, it should be only one or two pages and
it will be very important to:
*let them know you live in their district and/or that your organization
serves people from their district;
*tell them something about the work that you do in workforce development;
*include one or two reasons why you think new funding for skill training
would help people in your district;
*repeat any parts of the MWA letter which you think are important (the second
page lists the key parts of what we recommend should be in the legislation);
*and then ask others to also write letters.

We've been told that if a senator gets a total of 5 to 10 letters on an issue
like this, it can make a big difference in how they vote! It does work if
we all speak up - so please consider writing a letter if you think we need more
skill training services.

To find out the name and address of your state senator, go to
www.wheredoivotema.com, click on "who are my elected officials?", fill in your address,
scroll down and then click on the name beside "Senate in General Court."

Please send a letter by October 3rd! And please let us know if you send a
letter.

Thank you -
