The Governor has just vetoed a stunning range of public resources and
services. This doesn’t have to happen!

Now is a good time for all of us to call our state representative. Calls
need to be made today!! Tell your state rep what you think they should do about
the Governor’s vetoes! Please call today! See below for how to find your
state representative’s name.

The Governor vetoed $200 million from the budget passed by the legislature.
So far, we have found over $3,000,000 in workforce development services
vetoed. The Governor made these vetoes even though the budget was already $100
million less than the budget he submitted months ago! And tax revenues are
increasing. What’s going on here?

The Governor eliminated huge and basic parts of what government does. These
include, for example, eliminating state funding for legal services. And so
much more – it is a long list.

In workforce development – on top of all the cuts made over the past year,
the Governor made the following vetoes:

Line Item Program Action

7061-9626 YouthBuild Eliminated all
funding
7003-0702 AFL-CIO rapid response Eliminated all
funding
                        AFL-CIO incumbent workers Eliminated all
funding
Metro SW Technology Centers Eliminated all
funding
7066-0015 Workforce Development at
                    Community Colleges Eliminated all
funding

And

The Governor vetoed Outside Section 5280 which would allow participation
education and training programs to count against the welfare program’s work
requirement (this is for parents of preschoolers who for the first time are being
required to work).

So, what can we do?

Each of us can call our state representative today and ask them to override
these vetoes.

To find your state representative’s name, go to www.wheredoivotema.com.

Then call the statehouse at 617-722-2000 and ask for your state
representative. Ask your representative to vote to override these vetoes!! Today is the
day to place these calls.

Then please call Speaker Finneran’s office at 617-722-2500, and ask him to
provide leadership to override these vetoes!!

We need more education and training – not less! Our calls will make a
difference.

After you have called, please email us at massworkforce at aol.com to let us
know.
