Join us at Civic Participation Workshop that will unfold MCAE's new
Tax Curriculum and share information about the VERA Project on April
17th from 1-4:30 pm at the Adult Literacy Resource Institute/Greater
Boston SABES Center
Adult learners' well-being is profoundly affected by the current tax
system and by the policies of our executive and legislative leaders.
Have you always wanted to incorporate this kind of civic participation
content into your classroom? Or perhaps you already have designed and
implemented lessons about the U.S. government, the role of taxes, and
electoral politics into your curriculum and would like to learn about
other approaches and materials that are available. Either way, join us
for a four and half-hour workshop, where we will explore the recently
updated curriculum, Your Taxes, Your Government, Your Choices
curriculum developed by the Massachusetts Coalition of Adult Educators
(MCAE), and where we will be introduced to the work of the New England
Voter Education, Registration and Action (VERA) campaign 2008
including a host of appropriate and useful voting materials for the
classroom.
By participating in this workshop, you'll find that regardless of
students' status as citizens and voters, they can participate fully in
all or any of the lessons and approaches shared. And by choosing to
implement the curriculum and materials in your classroom, your
students will find that they can advocate proactively on behalf of
themselves and their communities more effectively.
Learning objectivesUpon completion of this workshop, participants
will be able to: 1. Access Your Taxes, Your Government, Your Choices
curriculum and websites with supporting materials. 2. Identify the
curriculum sections most suited to their students and programs 3. Be
familiarized with he VERA material. 4. Adapt a lesson or unit about
taxes and/or voting to use with students.
Presenters Diana Satin, the tax curriculum presenter has a Masters in
Intercultural Relations with a specialization in teaching ESOL. Since
994, she has worked as a classroom teacher, staff development
consultant, and curriculum developer. Kenny Tamarkin, the VERA project
