MCAE is again collaborating with MassAAL to provide Student
Leadership Training for students of ABE programs in Massachusetts.
This year the focus will be advocacy and media. All trainings are held
in the MCAE Conference Room at 6 Beacon Street, Suite 415 (4th floor),
and are jointly presented by a member of MCAE and a member of MassAAL.
While the stated objective will be to prepare for Adult Literacy
Awareness Day in March (exact date not yet determined), the
expectation is that the skills developed can be used by participants
to advocate for themselves and their families in their daily lives.
All programs in the Massachusetts ABE system, including those
providing instruction in ABE, GED, ESOL, Transitions to College,
Workforce and Workplace Development are urged to participate. For more
details. please see the message below from MassAAL Executive
Director, Ernest Best. Please contact Ernest at EBest at WorldEd.org [1]
-- (617) 482-9485 in order to register for one of the trainings.

MassAAL Advocacy /Media Training for FY08
Thank you to all that have participated in the highly successful
"Adult Literacy Awareness Day" at the Massachusetts State House. The
turnout for the State House event last spring was no less than
spectacular. It was said to be the largest event for the field of
adult literacy ever in the state of Massachusetts. That was a
demonstration of your understanding of the importance of this work and
adult learners being involved. The success of that day was due in part
to the MassAAL Advocacy Trainings that informed and prepared adult
learners for that event.
Here is information about the first trainings to prepare adult
learners for FY08’s State House event “Adult Literacy Awareness
Day.” The trainings will include a continental breakfast,
information on student leadership/MassAAL, advocacy & media training,
role-play and lunch will be provided. In addition, there will be a
preliminary trip to the State House in preparation for the big day.
Adult learner leaders and accompanying practitioners are encouraged to
notify your local legislators of your visit on that day.

We are asking that (3-4) adult learners and a practitioner per
program attend (1) training. There will be four to five programs
participating in each training for a total of (15) people per
training. This is a great opportunity for students from different
programs to meet. (Additional trainings for February will be announced
as needed.)
The trainings will be held at the MCAE (Massachusetts Coalition for
Adult Education) offices at 6 Beacon Street, Room 415, Boston, MA
02108. This is a MassAAL-MCAE Collaboration.
