MCAE and ABE have been in the news the past month. We plan to build
a MCAE and ABE in the News webpage and we need your help. If you have
an article about ABE students, practitioners, programs, or advocates,
please send it to KTamarkin at mcae.net.
Following are articles and pictures that were published in November.
The November 9 Lowell Sun printed the following picture of MCAE
Executive Director Kenneth Tamarkin discussing the absence of ABE in
the Readiness Project with Governor Deval Patrick and quoted him in
the accompanying article.

The MCAE Teacher of the Year, Carole Sousa, was featured in an
article in the Boston Sunday Globe on November 11. The article begins
as follows:
POLISHING THE WELCOME WAGON
TEACHER SENDS OUT ETHNIC COMMUNITY \'AMBASSADORS\'

Community Learning Center in Central Square: Irrashai. Benvenuto.
Swagat Cha.
In more than 30 languages, from Arabic to Thai, Haitian Creole to
Ethiopian Amharic, the sign proclaims: Welcome.
Helping immigrants feel at home in Cambridge and educating the
support agencies that serve these populations is vital for creating a
citywide sense of community, said Carole Sousa, a teacher and program
coordinator at the center.

MCAE Board Member Christine Tibor and her Framingham Adult ESL
program were featured in the Boston Sunday Globe on November 4.

One of Christine Tibor's former students escaped from a Cambodian
refugee camp; another was a conductor for the St. Petersburg Symphony
in Russia. But no matter where they've been, all of her students are
here for the same reason: to learn English and have a better life in
the United States.
The problem, said Tibor, director of the Framingham English as a
Second Language program for adults, is that although the program is
able to accommodate 620 students, she must turn away more than 500
every semester.
