[MCAEnews] Voter education materials from MIRA for ABE and ESOL programs

Dear MCAE member,

MIRA (Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy) is making a GET OUT THE VOTE push in immigrant communities this election season. MCAE is supporting this effort. 

Now, as the election season is in its final stage, the four candidates for Governor of Massachusetts have staked out their positions on where they stand on some key issues important to immigrant families across the Commonwealth. One of the issues is support for expanded funding for ABE/ESOL.

Attached, you will find voter education materials in English, Spanish,
Portuguese and Haitian Creole prepared by the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition for you to review and share with the immigrant learners and families you serve. These materials can serve as part of the civics education you provide in the classroom. I want to thank Claudia Green of MIRA for sharing these materials with MCAE.

Fortunately, each candidate has declared support for increased ABE/ESOL
funding. This is a great accomplishment for advocates and students in
Massachusetts who have fought long and hard on this issue and will continue to do so. On other serious issues, the candidates differ.
Most importantly, all voters should make an informed choice this election day, November 7th. 

We ask every eligible voter to take the time to study the candidates and GET OUT TO VOTE. And, for those of us who are not eligible to vote, remind your friends to vote. You should remind your students that, while who they vote for is secret, the fact whether or not they voted is not.  Those neighborhoods that turn out to vote in large numbers will be taken more seriously by elected officials, whoever they may be.
