Ernest Best, the Executive Director of MassAAL, the Statewide ABE Student Association, has asked me to help publicize Adult Literacy Awareness Day which is scheduled for the State House in Gardner Auditorium at 11 am on May 2. The MassAAL e-mail message is below, and I have attached a formatted version of the following message and a flyer for the event.

=========================
If you know of graduates of ABE, ESOL, & GED programs that want to be a part of making a difference in the quality of life for many of the Commonwealths citizenry, or programs that havent heard, tell them about the upcoming important event at the Massachusetts State House. Our ultimate goal is to create the kind of support that would increase resources to the field of adult literacy, which would allow us to continue to create positive change in the lives of a larger portion of the states population.
Make a commitment to take the time off with your students to attend. This is a great opportunity to really make a difference. We cant afford to wait.
******************************************************************************
TIRED OF WAITING LISTS THROUGHOUT THE STATE THAT TOTAL NEARLY 25,000? -- DO YOU FEEL WORKING CONDITIONS IN THE FIELD OF ADULT LITERACY NEED TO BE IMPROVED? Well
THERES STILL TIME TO GET INVOLVED!
In the spirit of cooperation with the organizers of Immigrants Day, and because of recommendations from many of you in the adult literacy community (ABE, ESOL, & GED) whove expressed interest in attending both events, but not in the same month, Mass AAL made the decision
to move Adult Literacy Awareness Day to the month of May.
Adult Literacy Awareness Day will be held at the Massachusetts State House in the Gardner Auditorium at 11:00 a.m. on May 2, 2006. Former and current adult learners, along with practitioners will meet at the state house on Adult Literacy Awareness Day and re-acquaint ourselves of the power we have to create positive change for the field of adult education and thus for the improvement of the quality of life for a larger number of the citizens in the state of Massachusetts. After the meeting/rally current students and grads will visit with elected officials from their various districts.
At the event, speaking will be current students and graduates, as well as elected officials, and organizational supporters such as the Boston Adult Literacy Fund (BALF), MCAE, & MWA. In addition, there will be awards given to some of adult literacys strongest supporters.
Thank you to the adult literacy community for your continued support during and after the re-scheduling of the Adult Literacy Awareness Day event to the month of May. Many of you have contacted me making a commitment to bring students to the State House event even before the new date was set. We cant thank you enough for your commitment and understanding of the importance of educating the public and elected officials to reach our goal of increased resources to the field, to end waiting lists, and improve working conditions to the field of adult literacy.
Lets have a strong turnout to show the public and elected officials that supporting adult literacy education is a wise investment that will create citizens who will help to increase financial resources to the state by contributing to the tax base, rather than remaining dependent on it.
