Deadline for Workshop Presenters Nears
The deadline for workshop presentations for the year's conference is
fast approaching! If you would like to present a workshop at Network
2004, you must have your application submitted to MCAE postmarked no
later than next Friday, June 25, 2004. There are currently many open
slots in our schedule for both days, but if history repeats itself, the
last minute rush of qualified applicants will prevent us from offering
spaces to those who have good information to present to conference
attendees. Please contact MCAE as soon as possible if you are
interested in applying as a presenter and have not done so already.
You can reach us at (413) 774-6455. You can also download a copy of the
'Call to Presenters' on our home page at www.mcae.net
<http://www.mcae.net/> .
2004 Network Conference Moves to New Location
The MCAE Network Conference for 2004 will be held at the Fitchburg Best
Western Royal Plaza Hotel and Conference Center due to scheduling
conflicts in Marlborough. They have made provisions for us to move this
event to Fitchburg, and have made every effort to accommodate the large
numbers of conference attendees that Network attracts every year.
Access to the Fitchburg location is very easy, as it is just off of Exit
28 on Route 2. Directions and other details about the new site, and the
conference in general will soon be available on the MCAE web site at
www.mcae.net <http://www.mcae.net/> . If you have questions before
then, please contact MCAE at (413) 774-6455.
Immigrant Learning Center Launches Public Ed Program
The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. (ILC) is a not-for-profit adult
learning center located in Malden that provides foreign-born
adults with the English proficiency necessary to lead productive lives
in the United States. As part of their work training students to become
successful workers, parents and community members, the ILC recently
expanded its mission to include the promotion of immigrants as assets to
America. Four major initiatives are underway to support the goal of
promoting immigrants as vital contributors to America's economic,
social, and cultural vibrancy: 1) A study about immigrant entrepreneurs
and neighborhood revitalization (underway in 3 Boston neighborhoods), 2)
The Immigrant Theater Group (their video "If You Could Hear My Voice" is
available), 3) Forums for K-12 teachers (Summer 04) on how to teach
about immigration and 4) a newspaper series featuring personal stories
of immigrants framed in facts and statistics to dispel myths (Winter
05). A second study is being launched about immigrants as customers in
the real estate market. For further information, contact Marcia Drew
Hohn at (781) 322-9777 or at mdrewhohn at aol.com.
Board Member Sherman Lends Hand to MCAE Scholarship
Long standing MCAE Board member Barbara Sherman and her husband Malcolm,
made a wonderful and generous gesture to MCAE by donating $1000 to the
MCAE Professional Development Scholarship Fund. Through their generous
donation, the Shermans gave MCAE the ability to offer an additional
award for the 2004 program year. In recognition, we at MCAE would like
to thank them for bolstering MCAE's scholarship program. We also thank
them on behalf of MCAE Members who have, or will soon take part in this
program to improve their careers and the adult education community in
Massachusetts. If you are interested in donating to the MCAE
Professional Development Fund or the Sissy Gaudet Memorial Fund, please
contact our office at (413) 774-6455 / (800) 339-2498, or write to us at
office at mcae.net.
