MCAE Scholarships Awarded
The award for the 2004 Professional Development Scholarship has been
given to two worthy MCAE members. One scholarship was awarded to Luis
DePina of WAITT House in Roxbury. Mr. DePina was given the award based
on his desire to continue his work training students to use computers as
a full-time instructor. The other scholarship was awarded to Lee Haller
who works at the International Institute of Boston. Ms. Haller is the
ABE Program Coordinator at IIB. She plans to use her award to enroll in
the Wilson Language Training Certification Course where she will
increase her skills and ability to teach reading and writing to students
in her program. Our heart felt congratulations to the winners, and to
those many qualified applicants who took the time to submit their
information. Don't forget, scholarship awards will be offered next
year!
Budget Level Funded by House
The House budget announced earlier this month, level funded the ABE line
item (#7035-0002) at $27.8 million. The budget debate in the House
began on Monday, April 26th. Thanks go out to all MCAE members who
supported this effort by making phone calls to legislators in your
districts. Your participation has once again encouraged the legislature
to maintain ABE funding in tough fiscal times. Watch for MCAEAnnounce
messages as we move through the budget process. You can also contact

Network 2004 Gearing Up for Big Turnout
Plans and schedules that were created just after the completion of
Network 2003 are already being put into motion for this year's
conference. All indications are that MCAE will repeat the successes of
last year's event. Kicking off our conference will be our Keynote
speaker, Karen Robinson. Ms. Robinson is the Director of the Human
Rights Education Program at Amnesty International. The Call for
Presenters will be mailed on May 7th. Please let us know if you did not
receive your application. Lastly, as part of Network 2004, we are
pleased to announce that we are accepting advertising for our conference
booklet, in addition to the opportunity to sponsor various events
throughout the two days. For information about sponsorships, booklet
rates and other Network 2004 related news please contact MCAE at (800)
339-2498 or at office at mcae.net.
Alumni as Advocates, Marketers and Fundraisers
In a recent article written by Richard Goldberg, David Rosen and Ernest
Best they describe how Adult learner alumni groups raise money for
programs, advocate for adult literacy, and provide role models for
current students. Examples are given of Massachusetts adult education
and literacy programs that are cultivating and promoting this kind of
involvement from former students. Please check out the full text of
this article at <http://www.mcae.net/Alumni%20as%20Advocate.htm>

Adult Ed Field Loses Supporter
Recently, the Massachusetts adult education community and publishing
world lost a good friend. Sissy Gaudet was a staunch supporter and ally
of adult education, literacy and specifically of MCAE. Sissy was an
easy person to do business with, but mostly was a generous and
conscientious person who was always willing to help in a crisis or just
lend a hand to someone who asked for a favor. We will miss her and
take this opportunity to thank all of those people who have generously
contributed to the Sissy Guadet Memorial Scholarship Fund. If you are
interested in adding your contribution to the Fund, please write "Sissy
Gaudet Memorial Scholarship Fund" in the memo, and send your check to
"MCAE" at 50 Miles Street; Greenfield, MA 01301. You may also call for
further information at (800) 339-2498.
