RE: [Icvv] ESL teacher - Diane Wallis - looking for a class tomatchwith Hello,
My students are excited about the exchange. We will work on pictures and discriptions of ourselves to send to you. This is a project I am letting my students work on, so they will decide what to send, take the pictures, etc. I think it will be great practice for them! Thanks again for partnering with us - we are a little technology challenged also, so we should get along well!
Sue

Hi Sue,
What an interesting program you are teaching in!
I would love to pair up with you. I am very new at most technologies so I hope I can find something to offer and not be a hindrance. I'll do my best.
I am very impressed that your students visit their children's classes once a week. What an innovative program that is.
I actually teach 3 classes and thought the Level 2 might be the best suited to participate in this project as some of them have good computer skills. The level 2 class meets from 5:15 to 6:20 M-Th. My other two classes are a Level 1 (beginners) from 3:15-5:00 and a Literacy class (real beginners) from 6:30 to 8:30. My classes are "open-enrollment" non-credit classes, which means that attendance is somewhat optional...students come on the days they aren't working and this can be a problem as they often miss a few days a week. It also means that students can join the class at any time so I usually have at least 1 new student every day. A bit of a challenge but I have no complaints. I love my job.
How should we get started ? I guess perhaps take a picture of the class and introduce ourselves ? Have you participated in anything like this before ?
Thanks very much for getting in touch. I'm excited at the prospect of working with you.
Diane

Hello Diane,
I teach a class of immigrant women in Birmingham, Alabama. My students are from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Poland, Japan, China, and Korea. We have a class of 11 students and the students range from low beginner to advanced level English ability, and range in age from mid twenties to early forties. Our class is a family literacy class with a focus on English language acquisition. The students have varying levels of schooling in their home countries - from college graduate (one student has a master's degree in education in her country) to some elementary school education only. All of the women have children at the elementary school where our class is located and they visit their child's elementary classroom once per week for thirty minutes to see how American education works and to learn how to help their children at home so that they will be successful in school. Our class hours are 8-11:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during the school year. We follow the same school
calendar as the children at the school. We would love to pair up with your class if you think this would be a good match. My class is delightful - lots of fun and I think they would do great paired with another class of adult English learners. My goal is for my students to get lots of meaningful practice in speaking, reading, writing, and listening in English. If you are interested in pairing with our class, I am including my contact information below.

Hello,
My name is Diane Wallis. I teach adult immigrants at City College of San Francisco. I have a Level 1 (beginning) level class with about 10 students. It is a non-credit ESL class composed of students ranging in age from 20s to 60s. They are from all over the world. (Eritrea, Vietnam, Mexico, China, and Central America.)
Because their level of English is low, it would probably work best for me to pair up with another low-level adult ed or community college ESL class.
Please contact me if interested. Thanks !
