We Need Your Help !!!
The Grassroots Literacy coalition has been
reorganized since March of 2003 to build the fight for
expanded Adult Education/Literacy programs and classes
across New York City. Among the many activities of
the coalition, have been demonstrations at Tweed Hall
and City Council, a Student Leadership Conference, a
Community Hearing/Speak-Out in Brooklyn and many
workshops.
The Coalition is as strong as its members and their
participation.
We are beginning a new campaign for a large public
Speak Out and a City Council Hearing, to place adult
education on the city's agenda.
We are joining with Welfare Rights groups on a
tour of programs by Hillary Clinton.
We have just completed elections of our steering
committee and we need your help to build a powerful
and effective coalition and to wage a broad fight for
literacy in New York City.
The key to our efforts is to build a real coalition
of all programs (C.U.N.Y., C.B.O.'s, Libraries,
D.O.E., etc.), to fight in our common interests, our
students and the larger community which could benefit
dramatically from expanded services and classes.
Several committees in the coalition are being
reorganized and we need you to step forward as a
member of one of these.
Please take a minute to consider working on a
committee and contact us.
The Committees are:
City Council Campaign Committee
Members will be working on mobilizing the literacy
community and others to hold public meetings and a
City Council Hearing to address the needs for literacy
and proposals to expand these programs across the
city.
Committee on Legislation
Will develop, promote and introduce legislation at
city and state levels to guarantee a basic right to
literacy and adult education, and to dramatically
expand and fund literacy programs.
Fund Raising/Finance Committee
To raise funds for coalition activities and projects,
including adult student leadership development and
organizing across New York City. This can include the
development of proposals to funders for support of the
coalition and its activities.
Student Leadership Committee
To assist and facilitate student organizing efforts
and student leadership development, including the
training/education of student leaders, teacher and
staff
workshops, materials and conferences.
Communications Committee
To work on networking for the coalition, including
website development, list serve, phone/email contacts
(database), newsletter, etc. Development of materials
for
organizing and connecting with other communities can
be part of this outreach and communication.
Committee on Meeting Spaces
Vital to our work is the availability of spaces for
meetings, workshops and conferences. New York is a
challenge, but we need assistance in finding locations
for coalition meetings, student organizing,
committees, etc. This too is an urgent need.
We Need Your Help, Now !!
The next GLC meeting will be Wednesday November 17th
at 5:30. Check the website (www.glcnyc.org) for
location. Please come to the meeting and lend your
energies to one of the committees. If you can't make
the meeting, please email the list and let us know
which committee is of interested to you.
thanks.
