Hello, GLC Members and Supporters of Adult Literacy,

Attached is a flyer about an important event in Brooklyn this Saturday. (The
text is also pasted into the message below.)

GLC is holding a Community Hearing on Adult Literacy. Please try to attend.
(And bring your friends and colleagues with you.)

We will be mapping out advocacy actions which we can take this summer on
behalf of adult literacy.

Building Support for Adult Education:

There is a crisis in Adult Education in New York City:

The Department of Education has already closed 147 classes for Adults in
GED, Basic Education and Literacy, leaving thousands of students without
educational opportunities.

Adult literacy programs are facing cuts in their already inadequate
funding:
--11% cut in State Education Department funding for the next fiscal year.
--severe cuts in the number of students eligible for the many EDGE-funded
classes under legislation proposed by Governor Pataki.

The Immigrant Opportunities Initiative put forth by the City Council has
not been included in Mayor Bloomberg¹s funding. This will force ESL/Civics
classes all over the city to close, and limit important immigrant legal
services.

We are meeting on June 19th to prepare for advocacy actions this summer
leading to a possible City Council hearing in the fall.

Agenda includes: Guest speakers and group discussions on why adult education
is important and advocacy actions we can take this summer; voter
registration; letter-writing; and a leadership award for Calvin Miles. Join
us in building a broad, powerful Grassroots Literacy Coalition for a strong
adult education system in NY.

³Don¹t mourn. Organize!²

Adult Education classes include GED, Basic Education, Vocational Education,
Literacy and ESL and serve tens of thousands of students. The students are
mainly immigrants, minorities and low-income New Yorkers seeking to improve
their lives. There are long waiting lists for many classes and conditions
are inadequate. Only 5% of adult immigrants who want to learn English can
even find available classes!

The Grassroots Literacy Coalition is a city-wide association of adult
students, teachers, program directors and community leaders who believe that
a high-quality education is a basic human right and vital for the well-being
of our society. Join us in planning, organizing and taking action to fight
for adult education in New York City!
