An Urgent Message from the Students of Adult Literacy United

Dear friends,

We are in an important transition period. Students of Adult Literacy United (SALU), was formed out of the Grassroots Literacy Coalition's support for student leadership. We are a student lead organization and because of this, we can be a clear and independent voice for literacy and adult education students --- a voice that is critically needed in the fight for more and better programs.

The Grassroots Literacy Coalition is dissolving itself and supporting SALU and the efforts of the Coalition for Adult Literacy. SALU is incorporating and seeking federal tax exempt status. Leaders in SALU have recently played an important role at the WE LEARN Conference in Boston and the recent Speak-Out at Judson Church.

We have conducted six leadership workshops for students and teachers over the past year. We have assisted five local student committees in their development and SALU members will be presenting workshops at the NYC Adult Basic Education Conference, the NYACCE Conference in Albany and the VALUE (Voice for Adult Literacy United for Education) national student conference being held in Hartford in July.

SALU has taken over production of the 'Literacy Rising' newsletter and encourages you to contribute articles and ideas. We have pushed forward the New York Bill of Rights for Adult Education and hope that it will soon have a hearing before the New York City Council.

SALU has operated with some small grants from Verizon, North Star and the Latino Pastoral Action Center, as well as individual donations. We appreciate the donations that many of you have made to this work, but all of these funds have been exhausted. We want to move forward with this important work and we urgently need help. Please donate what you can to insure that the student voice in adult literacy is heard -- loud and clear.

Thank you. We look forward to working together in the fight for literacy!
