Dear Colleagues:

Attached is a letter from Congressmember Hinojosa (D-TX), Chair of the
House Education and Labor Committee's Subcommittee on Higher Education,
Lifelong Learning and Competitiveness, asking his colleagues in the
House to cosponsor his Adults Achieving the American Dream Act (AATADA).
Among the highlights of the Act are an increase in adult and family
literacy funding from $570 million to $1.2 billion by 2013, an increase
in funding for Even Start to $500 million, and dedicated set-aside
funding for integrated English literacy and civics education.

Congressmember Hinojosa has requested that the field support this effort
by sending a copy of the attached letter to the education staff person
in your Congressmember's office, and requesting that the Congressmember
agree to become a cosponsor of the Adults Achieving the American Dream
Act.

Also, when calling your Congressmember's office, please ask them if they
have sent a formal letter of support to Congressmembers Obey and Walsh
for an increase in funding for adult education for FY'08. The dealine
for these letters is April 24.

Finally, on May 7, Art Ellison, policy co-chair for the National Adult
Education Professional Development Consortium, will be leading an
advocacy training at the New York Association of Continuing/Community
Education (NYACCE) conference. For more information, and to register,
please go to www.nyacce.org.

Of course, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
me.

Best, Ira
