Hello GLCers.

A coalition of immigrant advocacy groups, community organizations and labor unions have been working very diligently to undo the harm of punitive legislation and policies towards immigrants. For example, Many of you probably know that Gov. Pataki has been trying to revoke driver's licenses of those who cannot show a valid social security number. There was a court victory earlier this year that stalled that process, but then Congress passed the Real ID Act.

As federal law, the Real ID Act supercedes state initiatives, but states have the right to opt out of complying with parts of the law that are deemed too burdensome for cost or other reasons (unfunded mandates). The NY City Council has passed a resolution uring the State to opt out. Please take time to:

1) read the attachments
2) get your organization to endorse the campaign
3) write to Pataki
4) come on 11/22 to the rally
5) spread the word far and wide

Thanks. Sorry to clog up your email with so many attachments.

Marsha Love
