Dear Friends,
We hope that you are well. These are trying times.
Adult Education and Literacy are vital needs for our communities, but
instead of expanding programs and classes (which only serve 2-3% of the need),
serious cuts are threatening students, teachers and communities across the
country.
We have no serious alternative, but to fight!
Many of you are already organizing, but we need to reach communities across
the city to mobilize all New Yorkers in the fight for literacy. Literacy and
Leadership Development are powerful tools to effect change in city, state
and federal governments.
The Grassroots Literacy Coalition calls on all of us to push this fight
forward. This is not a time for giving up or defeatism. It's a time to spread
the word and to organize!
Join and Organize for the:
I. Day of Action in Support of Adult Literacy Programs
Thursday, June 23rd at 11:00 A.M.
at the U.S. Department of Education Offices
32 Old Slip, Lower Manhattan
Continue to build pressure on Elected Representatives
and make the public aware of the threat to literacy.
2. Support and develop Adult Student
Leadership and Organizing.
Invite student leaders to your classes
to speak and to develop student committees.
Some very exciting organizing is developing.
The organized voice of adult students can
connect with communities and is a powerful force
to defend programs and to fight for what is needed.
3. Support and Endorse the
Adult Education Bill of Rights
The Grassroots Literacy Coalition has drafted a
Bill of Rights and is aiming to get NY City Council
to pass it in the Fall. We need your help and
endorsements from many organizations.
We look forward to seeing you on June 23rd and to joining
you in this essential fight for literacy.
