To MEDIA LITERACY CLASS
Hi Guys--
I enjoyed our first day on Monday, and am excited about this project as I
hope you all are!
Check out the website for the Location One gallery: http://location1.org
And here's a brief recap on what we're hoping to do by next Monday:
1. Develop a theme for the project based on a "system". The system will be
something that ties our individual pieces together, something we "speak
through" about our political ideas. Remember the difference between
journalism and art. Journalism (although it's important) is just "facts",
art is something much more.
Systems discussed so far were:
-each artist picks an OBJECT and speaks about our political ideas through
art/poetry/fiction about that object, what objects do we never think about
in a prison?;
-a MAP OF SPACES in the city where each artist represents one space through
pictures, video, descriptions writing, the "MAP" showing an idea of "where
the prison is in the city without looking like it's there...";
other systems could be (1) each artist reflects on the moment you were
"politicized" in your life, meaning the moment you began to understand the
politics around you, seeing for example that prisons/crime/policing wasn't
just about making people "safe", etc.; or (2) each artist writes about
windows in a prison, or writes about what you hear at night, about mirrors
in a prison, light in a prison, or about that one dream you remember most...
2. Find a way for us to communicate outside of the Monday class time, really
forming a discussion within our daily lives around these subjects. Art
doesn't happen in a classroom once a week for two hours, it just doesn't...
Maybe once a week the group meets for lunch or for coffee, perhaps without
myself, Eric or Saulo so it doesn't seem like we're making all your
decisions; maybe you start a phone tree where you talk on the phone
together.
You guys should feel free to go to the Location One gallery anytime you like
(it's free!!), although we'll go to it together probably the week after
next.
Hope you're all having a great week and I look forward to hanging out again
next Monday!
