Hello Fortune tutors-

There are two great staff development opportunities coming up in the
next two week that I wanted to let you know about. While they are both
focused on math and math teaching, I want to encourage all Fortune
tutors to come. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Hope to see you soon.

Math Exploration: Algebra

Friday June 3rd 1-5

Literacy Assistance Center (LAC)

32 Broadway 10th floor

NYC

Some of the great folks from MEG (see below) are going to do a workshop
around algebra. How do we think about algebra, talk about algebra and
teach algebra? This will be hands-on with lots of math problems. The
workshop is open to teachers in all kinds of programs throughout the
city so there should be lots of perspectives in the room. I will be
there as well as some other Fortune teachers and tutors. Here is a link
to the LAC. http://www.lacnyc.org/event/?id=117 They ask people to
register with a simple on-line form. Please register even if you are not
100% sure you can make it.

Math Exchange Group (MEG) meeting

Wednesday June 8th 3pm-5pm

The Fortune Society

7th floor math room

The math exchange group is a group of adult math teacher who come
together once a month or so to discuss math, teaching math and actually
solve some math problems. The group is tremendously supportive, smart
and really pretty funny. We spend the first part of the meeting working
on math problems. Last meeting we all worked together in small groups
and built dogs of varying sizes out of graph paper. This took us into
surface area and volume.

Don't worry if you feel timid about your math abilities. We all help
each other and there are often comments such as "How do you find the
area of a circle again?" The focus is on the process rather than the
answer. How you get there is the most interesting part. Fortune is
hosting this month's meeting right in our very own math room,
conveniently timed to begin just as many math classes are ending. Please
come. Here is an article about MEG. http://www.ncsall.net/?id=317
