Hi, Iris--good question! I think your sense that it is a zero across the
board is right, but let me check in with Carol Van Duzer to make sure. I
appreciate that you're being careful in how you score, and I know she will
too. ,I'd be interested in what others think too.
Thanks--
Jane

Subject: [Bestplus] scoring question
Hi all,
It's been a long time since any questions have gone around, but something
has come up in our program that I think needs some clarification. Also,
since I'm doing a training later this month, it would be really helpful to
have a clear answer.
Here's the situation: a Spanish speaker shows he understands a question
because he answers it correctly in Spanish, though he is unable to answer it
in English. So can we give a 2 for comprehension, then zero for language
and communication? Obviously, the only way I know he understood it is
because I understand Spanish. If he had a different native language, I
wouldn't know. Though I'm tempted to give that "2," for the overall
consistency of test results it seems that it probably should be a zero.
What have you been doing in this situation?
Thanks for your input. I hope all is well with everyone.
