Good morning,

Thank you for the reminder email!

If a student performs a comprehension check of one word whose answer
then demonstrates that they understood the question, then they are not
counted down, and are given a 2 for full understanding. If a student
performs a comprehension check which demonstrates that the student did
not understand the question the first time it was asked, but after
repetition their answer show that they understood the question the
second time, then they are given a 1 for partial comprehension. If their
comprehension check shows that they didn't understand the question the
first time and then their answer demonstrates that they didn't
understand the question the second time it is asked or they are unable
to answer the question, then they receive a 0 in listening
comprehension.

In the example that you site, question #3 in the Benchmarks Listening
Comprehension section, the examinee demonstrates that he didn't
understand the word "employee" by asking "good employer?" The test
administrator then corrects by repeating "employee." The student then
continues to answer the question appropriately, demonstrating
understanding of the word "employee" the second time it is said.
However, because the student's initial comprehension check indicated
that he did not understand the word "employee" the first time it was
said, he is marked a 1 for partial understanding.

I hope that this explanation helps clarify the scoring for Listening
Comprehension. Please let me know if you need any other clarification or
have any other questions.

Subject: Question

I have a question relayed to me from a training on Friday 6/18/2004.
Question number three in the benchmark scoring for Listening
Comprehension gives the student a score of 1
for what is obviously a comprehension check. The examiner did not repeat
the whole question just confirmed the
examinees check on whether the examiner said employer or employee. Why
was the examinee marked down?
We were told in our training that we do not mark down for a
comprehension check. Please advise.
Thanks,
Annemarie
