[Bestplus] A reminder / Suggestion

Hi, Janet--yes, that is true, that program staff may feel there aren't
enough students to practice on--that is a real concern. But I think it
would be great for trainers to suggest students who might be likely
candidates for practice--like those you mention, and one of the other
trainers suggested giving a practice test to students who will likely get
the REEP. I think trainees need practice scoring ESOL students, since it is
a lot easier (and often more of a homogenous scoring experience) with adult
colleagues. Does anyone have other suggestions for students who might be
willing to take it as a practice test?
Thanks--
Jane

Hi Jane. Thanks for the "heads up."
It's interesting that you mention this. I was just reviewing some
evaluations from a recent training and one of the concerns that was raised
was that there wouldn't be enough ESOL students to practice with. I think
people are concerned that they shouldn't use actual students who will be
assessed on the BEST Plus. For smaller programs, this seems to be more of an
issue. I know we've suggested using ABE & GED students, especially if
they're non-native speakers. It's a good reminder for upcoming trainings.

Hi, everyone--
I happened to receive one of the BEST Plus Proficiency Development forms in
the mail today, and noticed that the practitioner doing the 10 practice
tests used what appear to be her family and colleagues exclusively. (Same
last name for many of the people tested, and I recognize the colleagues'
names). When we were trained, Lynda from CAL suggested that of the 10 we
do, that we practice on colleagues, friends and family for half of them, and
the other half should be students. I imagine this practitioner didn't
realize that she should also practice on students, but can you emphasize
that in your upcoming trainings? Thanks very much!
Jane
