Hi Everyone,
After compiling all your responses to my email about dates and times for
the GED teacher's group
Thursday afternoons were the overwhelming choice by a margin of 13-2.
The time was just about even so we might need to go with 3-6 so we don't
shut out those who work days (K-12) and or days and nights.
The topics were varied and there was little duplication.
In terms of sharing (see the first two topics), I think I will let your
first session be a total sharing session.
In order to do this you must all come prepared with material to share.
I will also offer a 10-hour series later in the year on ADP/GED sciences
that will include Chemistry, Physics, Earth Science and Space Science.
The 6-hour reading institute starting in October covers intermediate
reading, there will also be a 4-hour reading workshop based on ARCS
research later in the year that will have a 6-hour online follow up
(PDPs available).
I know you are still interested in Math problems but Algebra and
Geometry are the areas of greatest concern according to the data.
Having said all that, we need to come to consensus on three workshop
topics in addition to your first meeting that will be strictly a sharing
session. At that session, you may spend some time coming to consensus
using this list as a starting place to choose your topics for training.
* Sharing topics, presentations and lessons that work well in the
classroom
* Sharing ideas that bring creativity into the classroom
* Using authentic materials
* Teaching critical reading and thinking without using GED text
* Making Writing Part 1 interesting and fun for students
* Web links to specific reading, writing and social studies skills
covered in the classroom
* Assessments
* Tactile learning
* Encouraging discouraged adults
* Math
* Coaching strategies for students a few points shy of passing
(400-440 on all tests)
* Test anxiety
* Multi step math word problems
* GED Essay
* Critical Thinking Skills
* Reading Comprehension
* Connecting Math and ELA to world of work
* Reading Strategies
Kathleen Howell who is our new associate Coordinator in Workforce
Development and Community Planning will facilitate this session.
I will send out time and date details as soon as they are available.
Meanwhile, please gather a topic, presentation, lesson or creative idea
or two that you have had success with to share at your first session.
Thanks for your input.
