STATEWIDE TRAINING

 

 Focus On.....Learning Difficulties

 

 

 Target Audience:          ADA Coordinators, Program Directors,
Teachers, Student Support Coordinators/Teachers

                                           

This workshop will be divided into two concurrent sessions offered both
in the morning and in the afternoon.  Participants will be grouped for
the sessions according to their registration dates.  

 

 

Walter Hopkins, M.Ed. - is the Assistant Director of Special Education
Services, Harbor Schools and Family Services.  He has taught GED and
ESOL at the Lawrence Adult Learning Center and taught GED and was the
Educational Counselor at Community Action Inc., Haverhill, MA.

 

Session A - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and the Adult Basic
Education Classroom

This workshop will incorporate lecture, discussion and small group tasks
that will enable participants to understand the many ways that ADHD is
impacting their programs and classrooms.  Case studies will be presented
in small group exercises that will assist participants in understanding
the many aspects of ADHD that they encounter in the ABE setting.  

 

As a result of this session participants will be able to:

*    Understand the diagnosis of ADHD and how it impacts the adult
learner

*    Understand the historical background to ADHD

*    Understand the many differences between individuals with ADHD

*    Understand commonly prescribed medications for individuals with
ADHD

*    Identify classroom strategies to accommodate the needs of ADHD
learners

*    Identify factors that affect adult learners in the workplace

*    Identify teaching strategies that will benefit all learners and
specifically address the needs of ADHD learners and Federal IDEA
requirements

 

 

Ellen Crevison, B.S. - has been teaching ESOL in Quincy and working with
ABE learners at LVM since the early 1990s.  She was a YALD trainer and
is a consultant for SE SABES.  Recently, she trained for several months
with Robin Schwarz.

 

Janna Oddleifson, M.Ed. - is an Orton/Gillingham reading therapist and
has worked in private clinics, at Curry College, and as a consultant to
Southeast YALD and SABES.  She developed "The Hull Screening Process for
Adults with Learning Disabilities."

 

 

Session B - Screening Adults for Learning Disabilities

This workshop will address the issue of screening adults for learning
disabilities in ABE and literacy programs and present screening tools
and options that programs can adapt for their own needs.

 

The objectives of this workshop are to inform participants about:

*        The benefits of screening - for the program and for the student

*        The differences between screening and a formal diagnostic
evaluation

*        What characteristics they need to look for in a screening
process

*        Different screening options - including specific screening
measures and tools that can be used

*        Ways they can fit a screening process into intake procedures

*        Using the results of screening to select reasonable
accommodations and to determine instructional needs.

>From West Boylston Street - go about 2 miles (past Norton Company, etc.)

Dunkin' Donuts is on the left.  The college is directly across the
street on the right.

Turn right into the college, go up the hill and bear left.  

After the stop sign continue up the hill to student parking on the right


FROM THE WEST

Follow Route 290 East to Route 190 North (Exit 19)

Route 190 North to Exit 1 - Route 12 North

This exit puts you on West Boylston Street

FROM THE NORTH


            

Route 495 South to Route 290 West

            Route 290 West to Route 190 North (Exit 19) 

            Route 190 North to Exit 1 - Route 12 North

building on the right hand side.  The Harrington Learning Center/Library

YOU MUST GO UP THE HILL AND PARK IN ONE OF THE FOUR STUDENT PARKING LOTS
OR YOU WILL BE TICKETED!!!!
