JOB POSTING
Assistant Director for Basic Education
SEIU 615
Come build the movement for social and economic justice together with a
sustainable, creative program for ESOL and basic education for workers
and their families.
SEIU 615 represents 17,000 janitors, security officers, and maintenance
workers in the property services industry in Massachusetts, Rhode
Island, and New Hampshire. Our education program is integrated into the
overall campaign for improved jobs in the industry and justice for all
workers. Having just won a permanent Education and Training Fund, we
can now work to stabilize, strengthen and grow our education programs
which now serve about 500 workers a year. Classes are provided in
multiple locations in the region. Classes are generally taught by staff
who are "Teacher-Organizers", reflecting their role in engaging workers
in direct action, as well as teaching. This is an unusual program
design. Any applicant for this position should be certain they are
equally interested in both components of the work.
This is a supervisory position with responsibility for the

teacher development, assessment, participant recordkeeping, and program

funder relations may be required. The majority of our classes are on
Saturday, as that is the day most workers have time. As a result, we
employ many part-time teachers. The person in this position may teach a
small amount of the time.
We aspire to a collaborative, respectful approach among staff, at the
same time as we recognize that different individual bring a range of
skills, competencies and responsibilities. While we are looking for
someone to bring new ideas to the program, we are also looking for
someone ready to learn from what we have already been able to create
together.
