Hi All:

We sincerely hope that you've enjoyed a restful and rejuvenating summer.

SABES is gearing up for a year of professional development that you'll
find both interesting and helpful in meeting your programs' and
students' needs. As you may know, this is the last year of funding for
the ABE Math Statewide Initiative, therefore the last chance for your
program/staff to benefit from a structured, focused study of the
teaching and learning of math in ABE. Here in the southeast we are very
fortunate to have two very experienced math instructors willing and
eager to serve as facilitators and mentors of ABE staff who are
interested in, excited about (or even afraid of!) teaching math.

Workshop sessions will entail applying the ABE Math frameworks in
developing lessons that engage both the student and teacher and much
more. Located in an ABE math classroom, sessions will focus on making
math instruction accessible, interesting and meaningful.

Continuing as well as new ABE practitioners with all levels of
experience are encouraged to participate in this year's activities
designed to help programs formalize their lesson planning process using
the Math Frameworks while promoting practitioner comfort in teaching and
learning math.

Marilyn Moses and Michele Bahr will return as facilitators of the
Southeast group. Both Marilyn and Michele are seasoned Math
practitioners who have worked on this and other statewide math
initiatives including developing the math portion of the MAPT assessment
and the Teachers Investigating Adult Numeracy (TIAN) project. They are
as enthusiastic about teaching math creatively in ABE as they are about
mentoring others to feel and do the same.

Please see the attached flyer and application form for more information
and register as early as possible.

Thanks,

Nancy
