DIRECTOR OF YOUTH EDUCATION

Position Description:

The Director of Youth Education of El Centro del Cardenal's
comprehensive community service programs will provide passionate,
enthusiastic leadership to an alternative youth education program
providing education and career exploration services to 60+ GED and
Alternative High School diploma students, and will manage 10 full-time
staff and community volunteers. The Director is responsible for
supervising, coaching, and developing El Centro staff and, in
conjunction with the Boston Public School's (BPS) Office of High School
Renewal, in maintaining and developing a working partnership with our
in-house BPS teaching staff; coordinating program logistics; developing
relationships with parents, community and school personnel; and
cross-organizational collaborations.  This is a full-time position with
benefits.

Reports To:  

Agency Director

Essential Functions: 

 

*	To lead, guide and contribute to the student support process: 
*	Supervise and coach instructional and student support staff.
*	Provide personal, academic or vocational counseling to students,
as requested by staff.
*	Work in conjunction with other specialists to ensure students
are supported in their efforts to adapt, perform adequately, remain in
school, and achieve their goals.
*	Oversee the formulation of individual educational/vocational
plan for each student in conjunction with teachers and program
counselors.
*	Serve as liaison between students and outside agencies.
*	Work with parents and guardians to help the students achieve in
school.
*	Other duties as assigned.

 

*	To provide programmatic management and coordination:

	*	 Responsible for the overall management and coordination
of the agency's youth education programs.
	*	Prepare reports and data management required by funding
sources.
	*	Develop and implement policies related to program
regulations as approved by the agency and in alignment with the agency's
principles, values and policies.
	*	Develop, in collaboration with the Agency Director,
proposals to secure funding and prepare program budgets.
	*	Evaluate program performance in relation to stated
objectives.

*	Oversee the development of the curriculum needed to accomplish
program goals.

 

*	To direct and implement staff supervision:
*	 Responsible for the indirect supervision of the BPS staff,
assuring compliance through that program's BPS coordinator.
*	Do formal evaluations of all Youth Education staff, including
BPS teachers.
*	Facilitate regular meetings of teaching and program staff
regarding curricular and programmatic issues.
*	Participate in the interview and hiring process of new staff.

	*	Coordinate activities for staff development.
	*	Assure staff performance and compliance in relation to
program and El Centro del Cardenal goals.

 

*	To provide representation for the agency and program :
*	Attend or delegate staff person(s) to attend meetings relevant
to youth alternative education.
*	Serve as representative or designate staff person(s) to attend
EDIC/JCS/WIB committees dealing with youth education, employment and
training issues.
*	Establish and maintain contacts with other educational
Institutions and programs, government agencies, community organizations
and task forces dealing with the education and empowerment of linguistic
minorities.

Qualifications: 

*	Bilingual - Spanish / English; bicultural preferred.          
*	Significant experience in education, youth development, and or
youth program administration. 
*	Experience in proposal writing and capacity to represent the
program and its clients to funders. 
*	Successful leadership experience. 
*	Ability to successfully interact with at-risk youth. 
*	Sensitivity and awareness of Hispanic and Afro-American culture
and issues. 
*	Familiarity with issues and regulations related to education. 
*	Some knowledge of resources available to youth in the service
provider community. 
*	Masters degree in Education or related field. 
*	Demonstrated ability to work as part of an educational and
social support team. 
*	Ability to work with people of all ethnic, cultural, social and
economic backgrounds. 
*	Ability to pass a criminal offense record inquiry.

GED Instructor

POSITION DESCRIPTION: 

The GED Instructor is a full-time day position (35hrs/wk) with benefits.
Under the supervision of the Youth Education Director the GED Instructor
works collaboratively within a team of teachers and a GED Counselor. The
position is a stimulating and challenging opportunity for a creative and
organized individual to develop and adapt materials to meet student's
abilities and needs. The GED Instructor prepares and administers
written, oral, and performance tests and issues grades in accordance
with performance. The instructor helps develop a 'next step" plan with
the student. 

REPORTS TO: 

The Director of Youth Education

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

 

	*	Prepare and implement curriculum for GED subjects and
show written evidence of preparation upon request of supervisor. 
	*	Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of
instruction that provides students with opportunities to observe,
question, and investigate. Teach assigned GED subjects in either Spanish
or in English and communicate lesson objectives to students. 
	*	Participate in intake assessment reviews and student
class assignments. 
	*	Provide follow-up to students after they have left the
program. 
	*	Assist youth education staff members in conducting
workshops to develop student's employment skills and career interests. 
	*	Assist in the formulation of individual
educational/vocational plan for each student. 
	*	Coordinate schedule of student GED exams, serving as
program liaison to testing sites. 
	*	Act as an academic advisor to those students assigned;
ensure ongoing update of student Personal Development Plans and that
students have a "next step" plan in place. 
	*	Work with other staff members in developing project
based learning and "school to career" activities. 
	*	Attend individual supervision and staff meetings.
