[Abesoutheast] Deadline reminder: Teacher to Teacher: Exploring Math

Dear Southeast ABE practitioners: 

 

I just wanted to remind you that the deadline to apply for Teacher to
Teacher: Exploring Math is Friday, Oct. 13. The number of participants
is limited but there are still available slots.

 

As you know, SABES is in year 2 of a 3-year Math Initiative. The SABES
Math Initiative provides research-based professional development
opportunities for learning about and teaching ABE math. The SABES Math
Initiative addresses the content areas in math, with a focus on data and
algebra at all levels. It addresses teachers' anxieties about math and
cultivates an approach that builds more confidence as it builds content
knowledge in math, and develops helpful methods of teaching. 

 

This fiscal year, SABES Southeast will offer one Math Intensive called
"Teacher to Teacher: Exploring Math" that involves 16 hours of group
study. Teacher to Teacher will be facilitated by 2 experienced ABE Math
teachers, Marilyn Moses (Brockton) and Michele Bahr (ACCCESS). Sixteen
(16) PDPs will be provided to participants who complete the
requirements.

 

Also, in order to build program-based capacity for teaching and learning
math, we are encouraging pairs or small cohorts of teachers from the
same program to participate. Therefore, we have devised an alternative
registration format. Practitioners who are interested in participating
must complete a simple application form. Also, to keep the sessions
accessible and "program-based," we would like most of the sessions to be
located at the program sites of the participants (at this time, both New
Bedford & Brockton have expressed an interest).The first session will
take place at BCC.
