[AAACE-NLA] the USDOE: nothing can be fixed forever

Aloha everyone,

I cannot help but firmly believe that the USDOE should be dismantled. The
federal government might serve as a venue for ensuring some modicum of
equity in the distribution of funds to public schools (K-12 & public
education alike) and perhaps be vested with some power vis-à-vis schools
that are blatant "renegades."

Schools should be decentralized as a key element of reform. The corporate
paradigm of education and its "accountability" mandates have increasingly
alienated students, teachers, and school districts alike. Education policy
flies in the face of best practices and theoretical inquiry to date.

A petition getting the federal government out of the business of education
is one I will gladly sign, once, of course, the process of transitioned is
carefully and consensually articulated and planned.

Michael

Colleagues,

This is a good idea, Rodney. As I commented -- after signing the petition --
Harvard, MIT and other universities have stepped up to the plate to do this
for higher education, but it is the responsibility of the U.S. Department of
Education to take leadership in doing this for public K-12 and adult basic
education. Interestingly, the Office of Vocational and Adult Education,
under the administration of George W. Bush, took a good initial step in this
direction by supporting the development of USALearns, a free, web-accessible
adult ESL/ESOL program for immigrants. Funding ended, however, and ABE, ASE
and Transition to higher education were not developed. We need a national
web portal with good, free, online instruction in all these areas, not just
ESL/ESOL.

broadest array of topics. I just created a petition: US Department of
Education: Make US smarter! FREE Education, because I care deeply about this
very important issue. The website would have lessons on every conceivable
topic from the elementary to the advanced and from many different points of
view. These lessons would be organized in a logical way, so students,
teachers, and YOU can get the most out of the Internet educational
experience. This government run website would build upon the work of
http://www.khanacademy.org/.
