Thanks Art,

We had censorship on the NIFL lists in the early 2000s over Iraq. What is your sense of what is provoking this in the more "progressive" Obama administration? As with the NIFL censorship could this be due in part to the recent election in which now, given the Republican dominated house, OVAE staff may be "triangulating" to stave off a possible conservatyive backlash?

This may not be deemed as important as the issue over the stike, though perhaps in the broader scheme of things they may be related.

As someone in the policy leadership, the OVAE staff may give you some insight on their thinking. However, public disclosure also warrants public discussion here as well, as is indicated by your post on the open and free airwaves of the NLA.

The NLA, long may she reign

Subject: [AAACE-NLA] COABE Conference

I am posting my message below to the NLA List Serve because it was not accepted for inclusion on one of the LINCS list serves. it addition apparently all earlier message regarding issues around the COABE conference have been deleted from any LINCS archive. The issues raised around the COABE conference deserve a full and robust discussion by the adult education field. If that cannot occur on the OVAE monitored lists then we should have it here. I will also be engaging with the appropriate people at OVAE on their policies of inclusion or exclusion of certain topics on their LINCS list serves.
Art Ellison, COABE member

I am encouraged by the discussion on this list serve and I hope that it
expands into other areas of our field.

As a COABE member I am supportive of going forward with the conference
at the Hilton due to the financial penalties that would be imposed by
breaking the contract.

However COABE should not be neutral on the issue of the working
conditions of the staff that have asked for a boycott of the hotel. It
appears that both COABE and the local California affiliate planning the
conference have officially taken a neutral position, favoring neither
the workers nor the hotel. There should be no neutral position on this
issue for a national adult education association. COABE should formally
adopt a position in support of the workers.

I will not be attending the conference if there is a picket line or a
boycott called for by my brothers and sisters in the labor movement.

Art Ellison, SEIU Local 1984, (NH State Employees Association), NH State
Director of Adult Education.
