Hi Debbie (and all),
I would like to refer you to reserach conducted by Drs. Barbara McDonald & Patricia A. Scollay, "Intergenerationial Transfer of Cognitive Skills: A Two-Way Street for Adults and Their Children in California Library Literacy Programs. See http://libraryliteracy.org/resources/research/index.html

I've heard them speak of this research and one statement that really impressed me was that parents who say positive things about themselves ("Hey, now I can do this, I can do that") have an impact on their children's believing that they can also do anything. On the other hand, a parent telling a child "Don't be like me. I can't do it, but you can," does not motivate the child.

  Anyway, take a look.
