Katie and all: I agree stick to your guns and teach them english. Iowa
recently had another raid where Latino's picking eggs for a larger
corporation were deported. They use an old army tactic of separate and
silence. Under the law they do have some rights. Search warrants must be
used and family hardship cases are some of them. Lawyers in Iowa are trying
to help them.
Some call it the politics of panic etc.
So now the price of eggs will go up and many hard feelings in the small town
of Clarion, Iowa.
All I seem to offer is ESL classes for those willing. This whole thing is
politics getting the base excited and who is more conservative and more
liberal.
I wonder what it would be like to start a new life in a foreign country
where you could speak little of the language, misunderstand the boss on a
new job and wondering where the family would find a good place to sleep or
not. Many most go to bed hungary, wear soiled clothes because of no washing
machine and leery of asking for basic health information because of no
insurance
. Jobs are like hens teeth if you do not speak english. So if I coordinate
ESl and they go back and come back someday I feel I have done something to
enrich their lives and hope for a better chance in this US of A.
